Well, it wasn’t a great start to the day, but eventually things worked out pretty great. We left our boondocking site at 7:00 and drove around one quarter of Lake Tahoe. Unfortunately there was a race going on so we were unable to stop at all but one overlook. Luckily, the views from Logan Shoals Vista Point were pretty awesome.
After just a little time at Lake Tahoe and five hours of driving to Lassen Volcanic, Apple Maps led us 20 miles the wrong way to some dead end in the park with no amenities. Using our paper maps we found the south park entrance. But due to snow on the through road it was closed and we could only drive in about ten miles. It looked like I might have to shovel the road myself!
The volcanic features and sulfur stench were evident even from the short section of open road. And the snow did make it more photogenic, but then we had to drive two hours around to the north entrance of the park. Time was running out and we were hangry and hadn’t showered in days. First I went to the wrong end of the lake but then I finally found the shot I was looking for and the reflection of Lassen Peak in Lake Manzanita with near perfect lighting.
Still in need of a place to camp and a shower (I only had four proper showers since we left home, although I wash up daily at the sink in the van), we headed out of the park around 7 PM. About 20 miles down the road was the Mt Lassen KOA and by some miracle they had a tent site for us at only $27. With showers of course! Seeing. As the hotel tax rates in Cali would be out of this world, $27 for two showers and a level site, bathrooms, and a dump station seemed like a good bargain. So as they say’s well that ends well.
