On this 40th anniversary of both of our high school graduations, we explored the Mammoth Lakes scenic loop area of California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. First stop was a mile down a forest service dirt road and a 1.1-mi RT hike to see the Inyo Craters, which were formed geologically recently only 600 yrs ago. Next stop was the earthquake fault, a section of the San Andreas Fault where the earth ripped open.
We arrived at the Mammoth Adventure Center around 9 AM and got the $15 shuttle to the trailhead for Devils Tower National Monument, basalt columns in hexagonal shapes from a lava intrusion slowly cooling and cracking. From here it was a 4.3 mi one-way trip to Rainbow Falls, which totally lived up to its name. Definitely now in my top ten list of waterfalls!
After the shuttle brought us back up the gnarly road on this young kid’s first day driving it, we went to the Minaret viewpoint at Mammoth. Then we had a three-hour drive to our boondocking spot on South Lake Tahoe. The brake light may or may not have come on twice while Jessica was driving over the mountain passes. All part of the vanlife adventure!
