Day 26: A Thousand Miles Begins with the First Step—Backpacking Yosemite

July 21, 2021

Little Yosemite Valley backpacking camp

We woke up at 3:30 AM and drove to the John Muir trailhead in Yosemite. We still had some reshuffling to do before setting out in the dark with our headlamps. The stars were so amazing at this hour! You could see the Milky Way. We started on the trail at Happy Isles Nature Center around 4:30 AM. About 1.7 miles in we paused at the Vernal Falls footbridge for a bathroom break and to refill our water bottles. It was still fairly dark and we could not see the falls. We continued onward and upward to Nevada Falls via the John Muir Trail. Here, we paused to refill our water from the stream and to use our Jet Boil to cook some lunch (even at 8:30 AM). Then it was another mile to the Little Yosemite Valley backpacking camp where we arrived around 10 AM and set up our tent. Just over six miles today. Once that sun came out, it got hot! So glad we started early. Rachel set up her hammock and we literally cooled our heels in the river nearby, just chillin’ for the rest of the day. Tomorrow is the big one! Half Dome!
