Day 25: Casual Rest Day in Yosemite

 July 20, 2021

Vanlog, Stealth camping in hotel parking lot in el Portal CA

Today we slept late at our hotel and then took all our gear out and packed our backpacks for tomorrow’s hike. We were supposed to do a three-day backpack trip starting today but we decided to skip the first day hiking to Illilouette Falls so we could pack less and not have to backtrack. So today we just drove in the Valley and relaxed. We stopped first at our favorite (traditional) stop along the roadway opposite El Capitan and dipped our legs in the water and rested and snacked by the Merced River. Then we went to the visitor’s center area. The girls read and I walked to the meadow for views of Half Dome and to the Ahwahnee Hotel. I was going to go to Lower Yosemite Falls too (such as it is in late July, merely a trickle), but I fell and scraped my knee pretty good. Took a while to clean up the blood and all. So no more hiking today. Off to Curry Village for dinner. Then we checked where our trailhead was for tomorrow and drove back out of the Valley to stealth camp at our previous night’s hotel in the parking lot (since we were supposed to be in the backcountry tonight). Hot, hot night with three people stuffed in the van.
