Happy birthday wishes to Jessica, who started her day with a breakfast sandwich and coffee at Cowboy Coffee, It’s Bucking Good in Gardiner MT. We then drove into Yellowstone NP through the Roosevelt Arch and walked around the travertine terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs on the north side of the park.
Driving from Mammoth to Tower and then out the Lamar Valley, we see tons of bison, some of them up close. Just before Tower Falls, we had the highlight of the day, watching a mama black bear and her cub play in the steps at the Calcite Springs overlook.
We then crossed over Dunraven Pass to Canyon Village, where we shared a chicken ranch sandwich with fries for lunch. Then we drove to Norris and headed south toward Madison. Highlights on this stretch included a moose, eagle in its nest, Artist Paint Pots, Gibbon Falls, Firehole Falls, Grand Prismatic Spring, Biscuit Basin and its colorful pools, and a grizzly crossing the road right in front of us on our way back to Mammoth.
Then we had a steak dinner at the Iron Horse Bar and Grill in Gardiner MT on the river before heading back to the same pull off on Rt 89 north of Gardiner for the night.
