Day 31: Columbia River Gorge and Mt St Helens

 Wednesday, June 12

After having a wonderful breakfast with our friends at their house, we left Portland around 8 AM and headed east on the historic Route 30 through the Columbia River Gorge. Our first stop was at Chanticleer Point atop the Women's Forum Overlook. From here, you can see the amazing Crown Point Vista House (closed today) on a bluff overlooking the river. We then drove to said Vista House for excellent views both up and down the river.

Continuing on the historic highway, you will pass the trailheads for many different waterfalls, some of them right along the edge of the road and none of them too much of a hike. We stopped at Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Horsetail Falls, Multnomah Falls (probably the most famous with the bridge separating its upper falls from the lower falls), and Wahclella Falls.

Then we drove north into Washington state and stopped at the Mt St Helens visitor center (state park one since a rock slide has the Johnston Ridge national park visitor center closed until 2026). We continued out Rt 504 for some closer views of the mountain that erupted in May, 1980 before staying overnight at a rest area off I-5.
