We got up at 3:30 AM and drove the van 65 mi to the Hualalupai Hilltop for the trailhead to Havasu Falls. We arrived at the parking lot at 5 AM, dropped our bags at the mile pickup spot, and began the steep descent into the Grand Canyon. About 1.5 miles down the trail it began to level out and we hiked along the wash in mostly shade, stopping for a brief snack at mile marker 3, 6, and 8 when we reached the Havasupai Indian Tesetvation and the Supai Village. From here, it was a mule to the first set of waterfalls along the Havasu Creek, clear blue-green water that creates an oasis in the desert environment of the Grand Canyon. The first set of falls is called 50ft falls and is hidden from the trail, next is Little Navajo Falls, and then the amazing Havasu Falls. After eating some Fri bread, we continued. Here, the trail descends steeply into the campground, which stretches from mile marker 10 to 11. We claimed a spot right near the entrance and waited over four hours for the mules to arrive with our bags. Ours were in the very last mule train of the day and we didn’t get them u til around 5 PM. We set up our tent and made dinner and went to bed by 7.
