Although I technically haven't left on my trip across the country yet, I'm counting today as the beginning of my adventure. Right after church, I drove to Long's Park in beautiful Lancaster County, PA, near my home for the annual free evening concert and fireworks show. I arrived just before noon even thought he concert wasn't until 7:30 PM, so that I could get this amazing spot for the van right at the top of the hill across the street from the band shell. I spent the afternoon on the computer, watching TV on my over the air TV antenna, lounging on the elevated bed with the doors wide open and a nice cross breeze, and watching people cast furtive glances at the van or say "nice setup" and "did you do the build?" I wish I could say that I did. But the finishing touches on the van were certainly a big part of my vision for her, especially the bench that folds out into a bed combination that my dad and his brother built for me.
About 7:30, the US Army band, Pershing's own, began playing patriotic tunes and selections from Hamilton. Then just before dark, they struck up the 1812 Overture complete with cannons from the PA National Guard firing in sync with the music. Following two marches, the show commenced with a riveting fireworks performance. What a way to begin my journey across this great country of ours!
